Organic Gardening Soil
If you plan on having an organic garden, the most important part is to start with clean, organic soil.
To make sure your soil is truly organic, try to choose a spot for your garden that was not previously used for gardening where fertilizers or pesticides were applied. You should be wary of digging up a lawn that may have been previously treated for insects or with grass fertilizers. Although to have a truly organic garden it is necessary to start where no pesticides or fertilizers were used, if this is your only option, the positive is that these chemicals do start to fade out over time, so as time goes by, your garden will become more and more organic.
Keep in mind that you should not place your garden at the bottom of a hill, because all the treatments that are used on you or your neighbor’s lawns will be washed into your garden with the rain water, making your healthy, organic garden full of chemicals. For this reason, many individuals choose to make elevated gardens, for their produce or flower beds, which they fill with previously unused soil.
There are two main things that make a garden organic. The fact that these gardens do not utilize chemical pest repellents, and they do not use chemical fertilizers. These two things make your soil unable to be organic, and actually the soil will hold on to the chemicals for years. So what do these gardeners utilize to keep their gardens healthy and pest free?
Organic Pest Repellents
Insects are a problem in most every garden, and if you’ve chosen to garden organically, you are unable to use the tools that kill insects easily and quickly. You can create your own insect repellents hat does not harm your organic soil, which are typically garlic based, as most insects stay away from the smell of garlic. The problem with these repellents is that they need to be applied after every rain. You can incorporate these kinds of repellents with other tricks to ward off insects, like introducing HELPFUL insects into your garden who actually eat the bad insects! Some insects, like praying mantises will eat up the harmful insects in your garden. Also, the common problem of aphids can be quickly solved by introducing lady bugs into your garden. You can also put pest netting over your plants, which doesn’t interfere with the sunlight or water getting to your plants. Although this netting will keep out the larger predators, smaller insects can still often get in. But by practicing several of these options simultaneously, you may be able to ward off the bad insects as well as eliminate the use of harmful chemical insecticides! Your soil will be kept fresh and organic by utilizing these tricks instead.
Fertilizers
Many people use manure in place of fertilizers. Manure actually thickens the soil and has a lot of important nutrients for your plants in it. You can also use things like fish and seaweed fertilizers, which can help to stimulate your plant growth. Also, compost is a natural fertilizer and contains many nutrients to help your plants survive. Your soil stays clean and chemical free, maintaining your organic soil.
Organic soil is the most important part of maintaining an organic garden. Follow these simple steps to ensure that your soil stays chemical free and have the healthiest plants and flowers; you should always use organic gardening soil.
